SUWANU EUORPE project was presented to the Maltese Ministry of agriculture representatives, the local farmers and farmer’s associations and to the Water and Energy Board at the Water Efficient Irrigation Conference, held on 19th of February in Attard (La Valletta) Malta.
“WATER – BE THE CHANGE" is anational water conservation campaign launched in September 2019 with the aim of delivering an effective educational and awareness raising campaign on the optimised and efficient use of water resources to facilitate a cultural shift in people’s behaviour towards water conservation on the Maltese Islands.
Malta, as many others countries in EU, has numerous problems in terms of climate change and global warming. The issue of water scarcity is growing, and for farmers accessing water resources is becoming more and more difficult and costly. The European Union has approved a massive investment in water sustainability in Malta, funding a number of activities aiming to alter the processes of water processing and distribution across the islands of Malta and Gozo and improve the groundwater conservation and sustainability. Malta is affected by severe water scarcity and since time is at the frontline in water reuse, hence the agricultural sector will get access to 7 billion litres of recycled water every year, by the 70 km of network and over 400 automated dispensers. Nevertheless, farmers during the Conference were asking for a broader access to recycled water also in area that will not included into the “New Water” plan.
SUWANU EUROPE was presented to the audience by Gioele Chiari, Consorzio di Bonifica CER. He explained the SUWANU EUROPE comprehensive approach involving technical, socio-economic and environmental dimensions of water sustainability which is in line with the EU Cohesion Fund aims and efforts to contribute improving quality of life and economic growth in the European countries.
