DESCRIPTION:Water reuse for olive groves in Malia and Stalida\, Crete\n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nWaste water source\nThe treatment plant is in operation since 2008. The treatment plant receives the municipal sewage of the city of Malia\, and Stalida coming from households and urban use. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nDistribution System\nThere is a storage tank  where tertiary and disinfected irrigation water is stored. The pipeline irrigation system is of short length (approximatively 500 meters) since the irrigation areas are next to wastewater treatment plants. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nFarming system\nThe final effluent is foreseen for the irrigation of olive trees\, as well as greenery and ornamental plants.  All areas use drip irrigation\, there is no extensive irrigation\, and it is mostly seasonal. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nWaste water treatment description\nNutrient removal : Activated sludge treatment system\, nitrification denitrification\, phosphorus removal\nPesticide removal : none\nDisinfection : UV and chlorination in effluent disposal treatment tank\nSuspended solids removal : Aeration\, secondary sedimentation\nOther : \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nCapacity\nThe  treatment plant will expand to serve 20\,000 population equivalents  in summer 2020 and 30\,000 population equivalents in  summer 2040. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nExtent of the agricultural beneficiaries\nThe total irrigation area  is 1\,005 hectares. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nCosts\nThe cost of reclaimed water is estimated to be less than 0.3 euro/m3. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nType of agreement\nThe Wastewater Treatment Plant owner is the Water and Sewer Municipal Company of Hersonissos. The plant is operated by a concessionaire company which has the responsibility of: \n\nthe operation\, maintenance of installations and infrastructure\,\nthe maintenance and transfer of dehydrated sludge\,\ndaily\, weekly and monthly follow-up reports\,\nthe 24-hour monitoring of the operation\,\nthe observance of safety and health measures\,\nand the laboratory analyses\n\nThe owner has the responsibility of reclaimed water distribution works. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			 \nScientific results
